Today we're bringing you a lesson about talking to ourselves.

We're gonna be following a guy who’s in a really embarrassing situation, and we're gonna hear him call himself some bad names in his mind.

So let’s listen to the dialogue and then we’ll come back later and talk about some of the key language.

Okay, a very embarrassing date,  right?

So psychologists call this negative self talk. 

心理学家称之为消极的自我对话。

Now let’s look at some pronunciation tips in this dialogue.

接下来我们来看看对话中的发音要点。

1. I can’t believe she’s on a date with me!

略读：

can’t believe之间，can’t的/t/遇见了believe的/b/, can’t的/t/只有口型不发音，读作/kæn(t)/+/bɪˈliːv/。

date with之间，date的/t/遇见了with的/w/，date的/t/只有口型和非常轻微的发音，读作/deɪ(t)/+/wɪð/。

连读：

she’s on a之间有两次连读，读作/ʃiːz/+/ɑːn/+/ə/。

2. I want to scream at the top of my lungs.

略读：

want to之间，want的/t/遇见了to的/t/，want的/t/只有口型不发音，读作/wɑːn(t)/+/tuː/。

连读：

scream at之间可以连读，读作/skriːm/+/æt/。

top of之间可以连读，读作/tɑːp/+/ʌv/。

Aright, let’s look at some words in language takeaway.

1. dumb ass n. 笨蛋；傻瓜

OK, this is definitely not a polite word. It's means “stupid idiot”. 

这绝对不是一个有礼貌的词，它的意思是“笨蛋、傻瓜”。

例如：

I hate Tom! He is such a dumb ass. Last week he borrowed my mobile phone and dropped it in the pool.

Okay, so it's a person that is not very intelligent. And our next word is also quite similar, “moron”. 

好的，就是说一个人不是很聪明。我们下一个词意思也差不多，这个词是“moron”。

2. moron /ˈmɔːrɑːn/ n. 傻瓜

So “dumb ass” and “moron”. What’s the difference? 

那么“dumb ass”和“moron”有什么区别呢？

Basically a moron is someone who is very unintelligent. But a dumb ass is a person who does stupid things.

“moron”就是指非常不聪明的人，而“dumb ass”是指做蠢事的人。

例如：

I don't like Kevin very much. He can be a real moron at times.

我不太喜欢凯文，他有时真是个傻瓜。

3. tool /tuːl/ n. 受人利用的人；无用之人

If a person is called a tool, it means they are useless and good for nothing.

如果一个人被称为“tool”，这意味着他们是无用之人，一无是处。

例如：

He was looking for a job, but he didn't even have a resume prepared. He's such a tool. 

他在找工作，但他甚至没有准备一份简历，他真是个没用的人。

4. chill /tʃɪl/ v. 放松；冷静

So chill means “to relax, or to calm down”.

“chill”的意思是“放松，冷静下来”。

例如：

You need to chill. 

你需要放松下来。

I'm chilling with my friends.

Now let’s look at some phrases in this dialogue.

接下来我们来看看对话中的实用表达。

1. scream at the top of one’s lungs 扯着嗓子尖叫

Okay, so this guy is so happy he's on this date that he wants to scream at the top of his lungs. He's so excited, right?

好的，这个人很高兴能参加这次约会，高兴到想扯着嗓子尖叫。他很兴奋，对吧？

For example:

Sometimes you're at a concert. And you need to talk to your friend, and you're like, screaming at the top of your lungs because the other person can't hear you.

如果你在听演唱会，你需要和你的朋友说话，你就会screaming at the top of your lungs（扯着嗓子尖叫），因为对方听不到你说话。

Or maybe you're lost in the woods, and you need to scream at the top of your lungs so that someone will hear you and find you. 

如果你在森林里迷路，你需要用尽全力尖叫，这样别人就会听到你, 找到你。

2. get it together 沉着冷静；集中精神；振作起来

So if I tell you, “You need to get it together.” Basically I’m telling you to calm down, to relax.

如果我告诉你，“You need to get it together.” 意思就是我在告诉你冷静下来，放松下来。

So pull your emotions together. Get your ideas straight.

意思是把你的情绪集中起来，把你的想法弄明白。

Maybe when somebody is either very emotional, crying or very nervous, you can say “Get it together.” 

当一个人非常情绪化的时候，正在哭或非常紧张时，你可以说，“Get it together 振作起来”。

3. the hell（表示不在乎、无可奈何、气恼、不耐烦等）究竟，到底

“The hell” is often used as a parenthesis. When you say “the hell”, you're putting emphasis on your statement or question. Right, but it's not polite.

“the hell”常作为插入语来使用，当你说“the hell”的时候，你是在强调你的陈述或问题，但这种表达不是很礼貌。

例如：

Let's get the hell out of here.

我们快点离开这里吧。

What the hell is going on?

究竟发生了什么？

Where the hell are you? I've been waiting for hours. 

你到底在哪里？我已经等了几个小时了。

How the hell did you do that? That was amazing. 

你到底是怎么做到的？这太令人惊讶了。

When the hell are you gonna find a job? I'm tired of paying for everything.

Who the hell are you? I don't know you.
